Raw Food for Cats with Allergies
Most feline ‘food allergies’ are adverse reactions to specific proteins — chicken is the most common trigger in commercial diets, not grains (cats do not need grains anyway). Raw single-protein recipes make elimination trials cleaner because you see exactly what is in the bowl. This page is not a diagnosis tool; work with your veterinarian to rule out fleas, mites, and infection before blaming food.
Food allergy vs intolerance vs environmental itch
True food allergy (immune-mediated) is less common than environmental atopy — but both look like scratching, ear gunk, and over-grooming. Flea allergy dermatitis must be ruled out first in Colorado (fleas survive in heated homes year-round). Your vet may recommend cytology, flea control trials, or diet trials in a specific order.
Food intolerance often shows up as GI signs (vomiting, soft stool) without skin disease. Raw transitions can mimic intolerance for a few days — do not confuse transition stool with a failed elimination trial.
How a proper elimination diet works
- Pick one novel or rarely fed protein (often turkey, duck, or rabbit if available — our launch catalog includes turkey, duck, lamb, beef, chicken).
- Feed only that protein — no treats, flavored meds, or other pets’ food stealing.
- Run 8–12 weeks minimum before declaring failure (skin can lag).
- If symptoms improve, challenge with old protein under vet guidance to confirm.
Choosing a starter protein in our catalog
- Chicken: skip as trial protein if your cat ate chicken kibble for years and has ear/skin flares.
- Turkey: often tolerated when chicken fails — still poultry; some cats react to both.
- Duck / lamb: common novel choices for elimination — higher cost, worth it for a clean trial.
- Beef: useful second rotation after a successful turkey trial.
During elimination, avoid mixed-protein recipes and flavored supplements. Freeze-dried single-protein treats only if your vet agrees.
What raw does not fix
Environmental allergies still need environmental management (wipes after windowsill perch dust, flea control, vet-prescribed anti-itch when appropriate). Raw is not a steroid substitute for acute flare-ups.
Transitioning allergic cats
Itchy cats are stressed cats. Go slow — 14-day ramp, warm food, single room feeding. Document photos weekly (belly, ears, chin) so you and your vet can compare objectively.
