Raw Food for Kittens
Kittens grow fast, burn calories quickly, and cannot synthesize enough taurine on their own — they must get it from diet. Raw whole-prey style recipes can supply taurine when muscle and organ ratios are correct. PurePawRaw has not completed a veterinary-nutritionist review of a kitten-specific growth formula; use this guide with your veterinarian before switching a kitten off mother’s milk, formula, or kitten kibble.
Calories and growth rate
Kittens often need roughly 5–8% of body weight per day in food during rapid growth, higher than adults. A 3-lb kitten might eat only a few ounces daily — but spread across many small meals. Underfeeding stunts growth; overfeeding risks sloppy stool and awkward weight gain. Weigh weekly on a kitchen scale and adjust with your vet.
Meal frequency by age
- Weaning – 4 months: 4 meals/day is common; never let a kitten go long without food — hypoglycemia risk is real in tiny breeds.
- 4 – 6 months: 3 meals/day for many households.
- 6 – 12 months: taper toward 2 meals as growth slows.
Taurine, arachidonic acid, and vitamin A
Cats are obligate carnivores. Taurine comes primarily from muscle — especially heart — in balanced raw diets. Arachidonic acid and preformed vitamin A also come from animal tissues, not plants. Dog food and dog raw are not appropriate for growing kittens as the sole diet. Read labels with our label guide.

Weaning onto raw
Start with gruel-texture raw (thawed complete raw mixed with formula or warm water) if coming from bottle feeding. Increase texture over a week. For older kittens on kibble, use the cat transition tips: warm to room temp, tiny topper of familiar food, 10–14 day ramp.
Hygiene with kittens
Kittens explore with mouths and paws. Wash bowls after every meal, keep prep surfaces separate from human food prep when possible, and see raw food in homes with kids if toddlers share the space.
When to call the vet
Kittens hide illness. No eating for 12 hours, lethargy, vomiting more than once, or failure to gain weight week over week — call same day. See triage guide (cat section).
